The Whole Hearted Health Book Club, April Book Reveal

2/4/2018

Our Theme for April: Inside Our Heads

The Whole Hearted Health Book Club is excited to announce our book for April!

It's Brain Rules, by Dr John Medina, (pronounced Meh- Dee- duh).

Medina is a developmental molecular biologist that focuses on the genes involved in human brain development and the genetics of psychiatric disorders. He is a husband and father to two boys and has always taken an interest in how the brain sciences might influence the way we teach our kids.
--> Medina also wrote the book Brain Rules for Baby. My husband is currently reading this book and LOVES it, so I'll be sure to ask him about it when he is finished. If you would like to know more about that book, drop me a comment in the section below.

He is also an affiliate professor of bioengineering at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr Medina knows his stuff guys and I'm so excited to learn more about the brain.

The goal of this book is to introduce the reader to 12 things that we know about how the brain works, Medina calls these the "Brain Rules."

(The twelve rules at a glance are as follows: Survival, Exercise, Sleep, Stress, Wiring, Attention, Memory, Sensory Integration, Vision, Music, Gender and Exploration).

For each rule, Medina will tell us about the science and research behind that  particular rule, as well as how it might apply to our daily life, school or work.

Brain Rules has 262 pages. This means that you would have to read 65 pages a week, or  a mere 9 pages a day to complete the book in a month! Not too bad.

It seems like a lot of you are buying Ebooks, but I've still listed all the links you could possibly need:

Amazon Australia hardback, paperback or Ebook
Amazon US hardback, paperback or Ebook
Audible Audio Book (free with 30 day trail!)
Prefer YOU TUBE? You can watch Dr Medina's Google Talk (it's only 50 mins)

Our Theme For March: "Dream On"
The Whole Hearted Health Book Club is excited to announce our book for March!

"Why We Sleep," written by Matthew Walker

Matthew has a PhD and is a professor of neuroscience and psychology at UC Berkeley in California. He is the director of UC Berkeley 's sleep and Neuro-imaging lab as well.

In this book he discusses how sleep can improve learning, energy levels; regulate hormones; prevent cancer, Alzheimer's, and diabetes; slow the effects of aging; and boost efficiency, success and productivity.

I'm so excited to learn more about the importance of sleep, especially as a new mum surviving on little sleep. I think the findings in this book will help me to prioritize an early bedtime and healthy sleep routine.

Links/Places to buy the book in paperback, Ebook, or audio:

1. Amazon
2. Amazon Australia
3. Book Depository
4. Audio Book Version
5. Audio Book through Audible, sister company of Amazon (----> your first book is free!)
Below is a GOOGLE TALK with the author himself.
This seminar was recorded in October, 2017.

I wanted to share this video with you because I think it's a nice way to "wet your appetite" for the book. I know that a lot of you don't like reading or can't find the time to do so..... so sharing this video is a nice way to learn a bit about the book in the event that you can't crack it open for whatever reason.

If you can spare 54 minutes while folding laundry or cooking dinner, I think you'll be glad you did. (His incredibly awkward opening is worth the view alone- hilarious!)

If you'd like to join our Facebook community, click here. I will be sharing live videos, chapter synopsis and other bits and bobs worth sharing.

Our FB group is a hub of education for the busy man, woman, or teen looking for easy to understand information about health and wellbeing on the ready.

Enjoy!

This book was unlike anything I've ever read before. It was full of research that had been collected over decades, and for that reason I did have to take my time reading it. All the case studies were fascinating and I reread many sections to make sure I had fully grasped the concepts. I loved how the book outlined different parenting concepts from all over the world, particularly Europe, the USA and Africa.

This was a Christmas gift from my dad, and I'm so glad he got it for me because I wouldn't normally grab such a scientific book off the bat.

Starting this today!
Per usual, I will come back on here and give it a rating once I finish it!

So far, so good....
Started reading this book, but I've only made a very small dent so far.
I'm excited to finish my parenting books and then get stuck into this little number once I return home to Melbourne and need to put my feet up for a few hours a day.

Update 29/1 :
I read this book in five days, it was such a page turner. I really enjoyed the story, the poetic language and getting lost in some fiction for a change.

I'm halfway through reading this compilation of essays from humorous women and it's really entertaining. I appreciate the different writing styles and subject matter immensely.
I'm excited to read the rest of the series.
(Non-Fiction)

Final verdict, 3.5/5

My friend Rachel lent me this book, and I'm so glad she did. I'm only 1/18th of the way through realistically, but it's so insightful and the information is presented in a very non-threading way that isn't fear based.

I am thrilled to be reading it now, before the baby comes, rather than frantically trying to make time to read or hunt for dog-eared pages with the information later.

Also, a read in progress!
Kaz's book is broken down into weeks of gestation. Each week I read a chapter and then I eagerly wait until the following Wednesday (when I advance another week in my pregnancy), to read more.
Kaz is VERY honest, humorous and doesn't hold punches when it come to the not so glamorous aspects of pregnancy. She also presents information in a productive manner without instilling fear into the reader.

Final Verdict: 5/5

Also, this makes a great gift for an expectant, first time mother!

Quirky book, very unique to anything I've read before. I loved the story telling aspects and watching the tales unfold.
I would love to meet the man who inspired the Ove character. .

I'm re-reading this book because it is simply wonderful and Jenny Lawson's self-deprecating humor is highly addictive.

I just started this book and it's excellent so far.
The Glass Castle is one of the best books I've ever read, so I had to buy anything else penned by Jeannette Walls.

Loved everything about this book. It's all about where ideas come from and nurturing our creative sides. It was such an inspirational read. It changed my life, and that's no exaggeration.

Rating: 5/5

This booked is so emotionally charged since you already know the fate of the author before reading the first page. I loved reading this book because it was so well written and philosophical without being too dense to comprehend. I was super emotional when I finished reading it on a flight. Tears and all. I lend this book to everyone I can, but I encore you to buy if it you've been meaning to read it because the royalties go to the author's family.

(Non Fiction)

What at are you reading? Any recommendations for me?
